Sorry,Leroy Coggins developed the Coggins test. Jack Coggins wrote the Horseman's Bible.

Just want to point out that Coggins is not a disease. It is the name of the person that developed the Coggins test, Jack Coggins. The Coggins test shows that the horse is positive or negative for Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA).

Where to Buy a Horse

This is Randall Powell with Expert Village, and in this clip, we're going to talk to you about where you can buy a horse. When looking for a horse, you can talk to any friends you may have that know people that have horses for sale and go out and try them. That's your best bet usually because you have good references there. Also, you can look in the newspaper or on the internet, call people up. Make sure you talk with them thoroughly through about every detail of the horse and explain to them what you're looking for. Then you go out there and try the horse after if you can get along with what they have to say about the horse so far. Another way is you can go to an auction barn and buy a horse through the sale ring. This can be dangerous though. Sometimes you don't know the whole story on the horse you're buying or don't know where they came from or what kind of past they've had. It's probably better to go through the newspaper, the internet, or just a personal reference there. When you buy a horse, make sure you get a preexam by a veterinarian. Make sure the horse the is 100% healthy and sound. Sound is to the horse means that they're not crippled in any form or fashion. They can't have any problems when carrying you for long periods of time. That's something you really want to make sure that's good with the horse before you purchase him. Also, they need to test negative for cogan's. Cogan's is an incurable disease that kills horses, and it's not good to buy a horse that has this disease because then you're going to loose your horse and the veterinarian will probably recommend putting him down. When buying a horse, making sure they test negative for cogan's, they get preexams and be very careful from where you buy your horses from. These are tips that will help you in buying a horse.
