Advanced Rugby Grubber Kick

My name is Alex. I’m from Missoula All-Maggots in Missoula, Montana. Now we’re going to learn about how to do a grubber kick on the ground. This is a great ball to get through an attacking line to an ongoing player. The ball instead of touching the ground, is directly pointed to the ground; when you kick the ball it's going to roll end over end, there's a particular way for a rugby ball to land. When it comes through you hit the ball on the side of your foot or the top of your foot, doesn’t matter in this case, as long as the ball rolls in the right direction. The cones are over the distance here, so you can see where we’re going to aim for, the intended target. The grubber kick is a great kick to use putting the ball through the attacking line on the ground. It’s a way to get around one player in a line; put the ball on the ground to your wing; if there are some ongoing players, so you have some centers running on; even if it's a forward pack, or a fast move to get to the ball. Now I am going to show you do how to do the grubber kick close up, so that you can see how I strike the ball. Before it hits the ground you’re going to kick the ball, otherwise you’re going to send it to high. Drop it down in front of you, point up over your dominant shoulder, over your dominant foot. Down like this and when it gets right about here, kick the ball sending it this direction on the ground. You can see the bounce at the end of the run like that. It bounces up players try to catch the ball.
