Dog Chew Toys for Healthy Teeth

Hi this is Elise McMahon with ExpertVillage.com and in this video series we are going to be talking about canine dental health care. If you would like to find out more about my services you can visit my website at www.canineheadstart.com. So we are going to talk about chew, chew, chew in this short clip. What can you give your dogs? We talked about dog food, dog food is not going to hurt them, the crispy, crunchy kibble dog food is really not going to aid that much in cleaning the teeth. Definitely giving the dog something to chew is going to help not only satisfy their needs in terms of energetic needs but also help promote healthy teeth. I want to show you a couple of examples of what is out there that you can give your dog. One of them is called a bully stick; you can see the puppies have been working on this tonight, working on both ends. You can see that it is pretty attractive to the dogs, it is digestible, it is a natural meat and the dogs can sit there and chomp on it. you can see how it is working on her back teeth here, it is going to keep her back teeth nice and clean. It is a little bit smelly but the important thing when you get something like this, you can see how long this is in relation to her head and her mouth, you always want to make sure to get something very long that is not going to get stuck in the back of their mouth and that they are not going to be able to swallow. When something like this gets small, you want to throw it out. Another option here is probably something everyone has seen, it is rawhide. Some people do not like rawhide because they feel that the dogs eat it too quickly and it can cause blockages. Certainly you want to be careful if you are going to be giving rawhide to your dog, if the dog would not give something like that in an hour, then the dog should not have rawhide. You also want to be careful where you purchase it, you do not want to be buying rawhide that has had a lot of chemicals and bleach on it. But something like this size is not a bad size for dogs about 60 to 80 pounds. And again they work on it slowly, it softens up, it is quite hard to begin with and it is really good for cleaning those back teeth. Also with rawhide and with bully sticks when they soften it up they actually use their incisors to pull at it a little bit, so it is working on the whole mouth.
