What to Do if You Dial 911 Accidentally
In today's busy world we're always multitasking and you know trying to do different things at once mistakes are made and you'll probably accidentally dial 911 once or twice. Not a big deal if it happens don't be embarrassed or scared, if your still on the phone and it's ringing and you realize don't hang up just stay on the line and when the operator answers just let them know it was a mistake. For example "oh, oh I'm sorry I was trying to call my mother I must of mis dialed okay thanks, uh sure bye bye" and that's pretty much how it's going to go. Sometimes the operator will ask you to verify your home phone number and address if your calling from a land line because that's what's showing up on there screen and they just want to verify that there equipment is working properly, so if it was an emergency they would be able to send somebody out to that location if you couldn't tell them where you were. If you do disconnect before if someone answers it's still probably going to ring in the dispatch center and there still going to get that as the 911 call there just won't be anyone on the other end. A lot of departments have a policy whether they have to investigate every 911 call they get so in that case someone is going to try to call back. If you realize that you mis dialed and you moved on the correct phone number the line is probably going to be busy, in that case the dispatcher is going to think to themselves we'll they probably mis dialed and there on another call but maybe there having an emergency instead. What if somebody ripped the phone out of there hands and that's why it's busy? So in that case we're going send somebody out to the location to check on you and so you know we might actually call you and say " we just got a 911 call is everything okay" and again don't be embarrassed or upset these things happen all the time you know if you really don't think anyone called 911 sometimes phone wires do cross and weird things happen. Just confirm the address and phone number for the dispatcher or the operator and everything will be okay. Same thing applies to a cell phone sometimes when there in our pockets I don't know how I don't think anyone knows how but they will dial emergency services. Same principal applies if we don't hear conversation we'll try calling it back so if somebody asked if you have an emergency from your cell phone just let them now "oh it must of been an accidental mis dial" and they'll probably ask you to confirm the phone number and that's it, so really not a big worry we just ask that you let us know by staying on the line if your aware of it or if you already hung up keep the line open so we can call back and make sure everything is okay.
