Where & When to Surf

Here we are back at expertvillage.com with your host Howard Lefstein. Today we're going to talk about where to go surfing, when to go surfing, and what makes surf. In order to go surfing you have to have a beach; number one. That beach might not be facing the right direction. The swell is coming, so you have to figure out where the weather pattern is coming for the swell. Swell is produced by wind, earthquakes, icebergs falling off of landmasses, storms, typhoons, hurricanes. All of that is swell producing waves that can send surf towards any land mass. A swell is mostly produced by wind here in California. If you find out when the wind is up and what direction it's coming from, you can pretty much find some surf up and down the coast. If you need some help and you don't live near the beach, you can use websites. There's some great websites for checking out the surf. Number one would be surfline.com has about 400 web cams around the world that you can see any given beach at any given time day or night. Another good one would be swell magnet, takes live photos of the beaches in Los Angeles. So that swellmagnet.com, surfline.com. All cost money unfortunately. There's a free website called wetsand.com. Wetsand.com gives you reports and news footage from around the world about surfing. There's also hotlines you can call. You could ask you local lifeguard if they have a phone number to the beach to give you information. The best way I like to tell all the surfers doing is drive down yourself and check it. The newspaper also has surf resources. The news gives a surf report every night. Whether you live near the beach or live far away, there's a way to find out if there's way to go our surfing. Go out there and have fun guys.
