Competitive Cycling Tactics & Strategies

Now we are going to talk about tactics during the race. You've got the excitement at the start line, you've taken off and you are on your way to your first big race. Most importantly is to just start getting a feel of the people you are riding with. Start watching the movement of the group or the peloton as we call it and staying out of the wind. That is the most important thing. That's the fastest way to exhaust yourself is to get on the front and let everybody else ride on your wheel. That is definitely something you want to avoid if you want to win the race because you will be way too tired. So watch is going on around you, keep your eyes ahead. Don't just rely on the wheel in front of you but also make sure you are always on somebody's wheel staying out of the wind, conserving your energy, watching what is going on, watch for what is called break aways if one rider decides to take off and you know you might have a teammate or if you are by yourself either way, you might want to chase that rider down. You want to make sure that you kind of watch the flow of the race and stay in it and most importantly once you've stayed on somebody's wheel and you've stayed out of the wind, when you got 1 lap to go, 1 mile to go, if it's a road race, you want to position yourself for the sprint.
