Tips for Buying a Fencing Mask in Fencing

Hi, this is Tim Weske on behalf of ExpertVillage.com. This clip I'm going to show you about the fencing masks under the protective gear that we have. If you would like to see more information about these, go to SwordPlayLA.com. The mask, you want to make sure that you're getting a good mask. If you're buying things online, a lot of times there's a lot of stipulations and things you don't want to, or a lot of things the United States Fencing Association says that masks have to be a certain punch. In other words, if you're hit in the face, there's certain degrees of pressure that it has to withstand. So you, what you want to do is go to the website such as HOMFencing.com. That's a reputable site where you can find, find good equipment. But, on the mask you have different things. You have the grid of the mask. You want to work out in these, so if you're a little claustrophobic, you won't get all freaked out inside of it. Also, it makes your breathing a little more difficult, not just the action of the sport, but the cardio that goes along with the sport, but also inside of the cage of the mask. When wearing the mask, you want to make sure, if you can see inside of here, there's always a headliner that goes on top right here. You want to make sure that's not covering your eyes, and that your chin sits in the, common sense, little chin area right there so that your mouth, nose and eyeballs can be seen from here from the grid. When adjusting a mask, you adjust it with what's called the tongue. The tongue is generally only held together on the mask by a small bolt on the top, small bolt on the top right here. So, if you were just to adjust your mask by pushing the tongue like this, you're eventually going to break that bolt. The best way to do that, to adjust them, is by putting your fingers around the tongue like this and pushing it from this part of the tongue, the metal inside. This area of the mask is called the bib. Of course, the bib you want to have a heavy material inside of there so that it's protecting the throat. Many, many, many, many times foil points, epee points, saber points are hitting or cutting into this area, and so the heavier the cloth in here, the better chance you're going to withstand any kind of hit to the very delicate area of your throat.
