Using Molds in Candle Making

To begin with we have the metal mold. These are essentially the standard that professional makers will use. They come in various shapes and sizes and if you maintain them properly they will last you a life time. When looking for a metal mold, try and find a nice heavy durable mold with a nice wide vase and preferably is seamless. This will prevent you from having to rub down or snip off any seams off the candle when it is released from the mold. Next we have a polycarbonate mold and again these come in very interesting shapes and sizes such as cones, spheres or pyramids. These are very easy molds to use. Just avoid pouring extremely hot wax into them and when looking to purchase these types of molds, make sure there are no cracks around the base of your mold because the base is actually where the top of your candle is when it is released from the mold. So make sure there are no scratches in or around the mold when purchasing those. Next we will be talking about flexible molds. Flexible molds are usually made of rubber or PVC and these are mainly used for novelty shapes, they usually have a lot of fine detail in them. When purchasing flexible molds you are going to look for molds that have thick walls and make sure there are no small holes in them. The last thing you want to do is pour your hot wax into a flexible mold that has tiny pin holes in them and your wax will come leaking out. So again, thick walls and ensure there are no holes in them before you go ahead and use those. At last, we can talk about improvised molds such as milk cartoons, soup cans and muffin tins anything around your house that is going to hold wax and that won’t melt. Just be careful in choosing an improvised mold and again, make sure that it won’t burn or melt when you add your wax into it. We also tend to use a lot of glass containers. I am sure you have seen these at your local stores or crafters workshops. When purchasing glass containers for your candles, make sure that these are approved for candle burning and there are different qualities of glass containers. Try to purchase the highest quality of glass container you can. These come obviously come in many different shapes, many different sizes and adds great beauty to the candles that you will be making.
