Using Cutaways in Indie Filmmaking

Hello I’m Corey Turner here on ExpertVillage.com and today we’re talking about low budget moving making. Something most people don’t think about is cutaways, what is a cutaway? For instance right now I’m talking to you, I’m delivering my lines and let’s say an actor is delivering their lines but they mess up. So you film the next section but they’re facing this way or by now they’ve picked up a cup or they’ve done something that you can’t seamlessly put those two shots together. These are where cutaways are going to help you, watch the big movies and it’s full of cutaways. You’ll see somebody look at their watch and there will be a close up of their watch. It’s an awkward enough cut as it is to jump from one side to the other, if you didn’t have the watch in between, it would have looked really terrible. The problem is you’re not going to notice until you go into the editing that you’re going to have shots like that. Sometimes we’re talking with this arm up, next time we’re talking like this. You need those cutaways to make those transitions and you also need lots of coverage.
