Hello my name is Duane Carter and on behalf of Expert Village I'm here to talk about how to play the cornet or trumpet. We're going to talk about one of the first exercise that you should begin to work on and that's the long tone. Long tones are beneficial whether your a beginner or advanced because it helps to build the muscles of the armature in the face as well as the diagram the long tones are produced by first filling your lungs completely with air using the deep breathing method that we talked about. Placing the horn to your lips and then begin to play a tone until all of the air in the lungs is completely escaped. Then you rest for as long as you played and then begin on another note doing this process. There are many books that have exercise for the long tone I particularly like to use one that begins on the C on the staff and go down chromatically to the C below the staff, and then as far as I can go down beyond that. Then return to the C on the staff and go up to a C above the staff or as far as I can go above that.
