Replacing the Tank Bolts on a Toilet

If you determine that you need to replace your tank bolts because of a rusty bolt, or, which is more often the case, a corroded washer, it’s fairly simple to do. You definitely need to drain the tank, get all the water out of it. and then look down in here - you’ll see the head of the bolt, that’s actually the screws here, the slotted top. And you’re going to want to hold it still with a screwdriver or another flat item while underneath you loosen the bolts with your socket wrench.

So really, you’ll simply just reach under - or you may need someone to help you but, it’s simply a matter of holding the head still while you ratchet out the bolts from the bottom. And once you’ve done that, the tank lifts right off there - it’s not that heavy when it’s empty, and you’ll just do everything in reverse. I would recommend taking the bolts with you to the home center so you make sure you have the right size. But that will take care of your problem.
