Microphones & Sound Equipment in Indie Filmmaking
Hello, I’m Corey Turner here on behalf of Expert Village.com and today we are talking about low budget movie making. Testing. Okay. This is a microphone, this is a boom pole. We want to take special attention to make sure that we do everything we can to give the best sound possible. So thinking about sound we went with this microphone here. It is a small, lightweight but it gives a very good tone shape of sound area so that we can direction to whoever is talking and we can pick them up without picking up a lot of the noises that you are going to find especially when you are filming outside you have to watch out for airplanes. If you are filming inside you have to watch out for air conditioners as the air is going through the vents that is going to cause you a lot of problems. This microphone also has another attachment which is called cattail which helps if it is windy outside and we are working on that. Now the boom pole can extend (I believe this one extends up to about 6 feet tall) and whoever is going to be running the boom pole make sure he has a strong upper body. The reason is when you put your gloves on and you hold you foam padded areas you want to make sure you hold the foam padded areas. If you hold on the metal and get any squeaking noises your microphone is going to pick it up. If you allow your cord to bang around you are going to pick that up as well and it is going to ruin your shot so you want to make sure that you grasp from the foam area. This person is going to be spending most of the day just like this. Okay, it’s been about 2 seconds and I am about to die because I don’t have the upper body strength. Okay, woo, it’s been about 2 seconds and I am worn out already. So you are going to want somebody who can stand there and hold that microphone especially if you have a long dialogue scene that is going to take 3 to 4 minutes. You want to make sure that person can keep it up.
