The Types of Cameras Used in Indie Filmmaking
Hello I’m Corey Turner here on ExpertVillage.com and today we’re talking about low budget moving making. Let’s go ahead and talk about equipment while we’re talking about budget. The most important use of equipment when we’re making movies is the camera. I use this camera here on my last two projects as well as the kids’ show, and this is the Cannon XL2, this is a three-chip digital camera. There’s a lot of factors _00:30_does deciding what camera to use and budget was the biggest one. This camera was reasonably priced and now you can probably find one on your large oxygen websites for an even better price. It also uses the mini digital DVD tapes, you can find these at any drug store; at any of the large retailers as well as your grocery stores so they are readily available and tapes can run you anywhere from $5 to $8, depending upon the brand that you choose. So as we were going to use 32 to 42 tapes to make our movie, this was a wise decision for us. Also we couldn’t quite afford an HD camera because a lot of things go into affect when you’re going to use an HD camera. Not only do you have the expensive HD camera, the tapes, but you also have to think about post and you have to have plenty of memory for the capability to edit. So for our fist two projects we went here with the digital camera, you can run sound off the front of this camera however if you run sound off the camera off the mic you’re going to pick up a lot of buzz and a lot of hum from the camera. So the next important piece of equipment is your sound and your mic.
