How & When to Pick Peppers in your Garden

I'm Doug Smiddy of Smiddy's Gardening Services here on behalf of expertvillage.com and welcome to my garden. Today we're here to talk about low maintenance gardening. Alright, now it's time to harvest some peppers. In this case we're growing some bell peppers and there's a reason why they're called bell peppers cause that's what they're shaped like. Now they take a long time to go from a flower into a pepper and I get a little anxious sometimes and want to pick them. So I'm going to kind of move the branches around and see this one it's not quiet big enough it's a little small, you want it to be a little fuller and think about how they look in a supermarket it's really the best guide line for you. Just below it I see a nice big one and just like a tomato you want to be able to pretty much remove it easily and you twist and you twist and you pull it off. Another way to be sure you can see it's shaped largely enough as you tap it and you listen, I don't know if you can hear that, but it should have a hollow sound to it and that's really the best way to know when a harvest, a nice bell pepper. You can let them go a little longer than this because a green pepper will turn red after a while too. So I was a little anxious to have some peppers with my dinner tonight so I'm going to pick this for tonight, but you can let them go red too and they'll be even tastier.
