History of the Theremin
On behalf of ExpertVillage.com my name is Mark, and we’re going to talk about the history of the Theremin. Leon Theremin was a scientist who came to America and he was very much involved in early radio. And the Theremin evolved out of his early efforts where you had the two oscillators beating together making a squealing sound and he later perfected this into a musical instrument. In the mid 20s he demonstrated it in Russia before he came to The United States, there’s an excellent documentary on the Theremin, its Theremin and Electronic Musical Odyssey by Steve Martin. The only part in the documentary that is not correct is where Brian Wilson says that if Theremin was used on good vibrations the ‘oooooooo’ sound, that is not correct they were looking for a Theremin effect and they used a modified audio oscillator. Other than that the majority is correct. The Theremin was not a big success, they were very-very expensive in the 1920s at the beginning of the Great Depression, there was no music for them, no one taught anyone how to play the Theremin and there were maybe 400 made and in fact 100 of the originals are still in existence. A few of them found their way into Hollywood, in the late 40s through late 50s they were used on quite a few Sci-Fi movies, The Day the Earth Stood Still, Forbidden Planet and so forth.
