How to Apply Spackle & Caulk to Repair a Door

Hi, I’m Grady Johnson representing Expert Village.com. Be careful when you are sanding and after the prime coat you do it very lightly. Use a light touch, always use paper at 220 and you can go as high as 280. Make sure you are not taking the primer off. The primer needs to be there we are just trying to smooth out the top surface of it. We are going to wipe it all down the way we like then I am going in here and take some white spackling. This is what this looks like. It is just kind of a white spackling that you can work with. To get a little bit of that on your blade and we put a nice and healthy amount on there. Then we even that all out with my blade. Want to get that off of the top. You can see I even that out. This light spackling is really easy to use. You see I am just laying that on top of that and after that dries I can sand that smooth. Now we can see a little crack here we like to rub a little of this in there. You can just do this with your fingers. Now I want to move on to caulking. I will first show you how to put in a tube of caulking because there is a little trick to it. When you get caulking it comes in a tube and it will not be cut and also will have a little place down here that needs to be poked to let the caulking come through. We are going to use our razor knife and cut the tip off. Don’t want to cut off too much because the bigger the hole the bigger your beads are going to be. You don’t want too much caulking coming out. So what you want to do is hold this at an angle and then cut yourself an angle on your tube. Now that it is ready to go you want to put around your gun and just pull the button here and pull this all the way back and pop that in there and you want to keep that angle where you want to work it. Now what we use caulking for are these cracks like this because we can lay a bead in there and we can lay it out. Now we put our spackling on these flat surfaces but for these little cracks in here we are going to want to put caulking. Not too thick a bead, a smaller bead that we can lay out. Now you want to hold your gun at kind of an angle so that you can work your bead. This is like anything else; you just kind of got to get the hang of it. You just work your line down like this and then clip it off. Now when you put it on there, you lay it out and that is because you don’t want ridges. You saw that little ridge you worked out. You want to get all those ridges out because once you paint you can’t sand this. Now lets see, that looks nice and smooth now. See some old caulking there rolling up on us and we want to smooth all that out. All right. Pretty good shape there. That is how you use a caulking gun.
