Your hydraulic disc brake is a simple, but kind of imposing system to work with because it relies on fluid displacement and all sorts of you know, laws of physics that you probably haven't thought of since high school. Rough rundown is that you pull a lever, and it makes some pads move which is the same thing as any other sort of rake you've ever used on a bike or anything else works. The keys to your system working well and reliably are that your pads and disc brake rotors are clean and free of contaminants. Your fluid, which is contained in your lines, is clean, doesn't have water, air or thing that seep in through natural physical processes. That you have a good bleed in your system, which means that your system is full of air. You do that by properly operating your bleed kit to get things bled, or have it done at your shop. And that you have your ergonomics of your level comfortable, you know for your hand to pull so you get the most leverage and stuff like that.
