How to Back Peddle in Football Defense
Hi this is Tim Gardener on ExpertVillage.com; we’re going to be going over some advanced techniques in football. Alright we’re going to be talking about back peddling, the most important thing in back peddling is your body position, with your body position you always want to have your chest, your weight over the balls of your feet, not the front of your feet because you don’t want to be leaning forward on your toes and you don’t want to be flat footed kind of back on your heels. You want to be on the balls of your feet where you’ve got good control. The next thing is when you push off, you don’t want to false step because you’re already at a disadvantage with you going backwards and the receiver coming forward so you don’t want to loose any steps. So what you want to do is you need to choose a foot and you’ve got to push off of it, so that you don’t loose anything. The next thing is the positioning of your feet while you’re back peddling. The main thing you don’t want to do is lift your feet high up off the ground. The higher your foot is off the ground the more time it’s going to take you to react. If I’m here when I’ve got to react, I’ve got to wait for my foot to hit the ground for me to change direction, but if my feet are sliding across the top of the turf or the grass and I’m ready to change directions, then I can do it very quickly.
