Sanding Roof Eaves

Hello! My name is Grady Johnson and I'm a professional painter, and today I represent expertvillage.com. Now we're going to talk a little bit about sanding the exterior eaves of your house. Now once you've done your caulking and your spackling, you've let that dry real real good, it's time to go ahead and sand everything down. The first thing I want to show you is how to cut a piece of sandpaper. This is 220 grit, which is our standard paper. I like 220 because it doesn't fill up that bad and also it's tough enough to do the job without tearing up my surface. You just fold that in half. You only want to use half a piece of sandpaper. Once you have that all pressed out, take your 5 in 1 or putty knife and go ahead and rip that line. Now you have half a sheet of sandpaper. Put the other out of the way and you want to fold this is up kind of like an envelope. You're going to go ahead and fold it first of all about 3/4 of the way and then you'll bring the other half back on over to meet it. Then you have something in your hand that you can work with that's going to be able to do the job. This gives you the ability to kind of sand and have the flexibility that you need. This was oil based paint that we're going to be putting a latex on, so we want to flatten this on out. Sand it out really good so it takes the primer away. Get that nice and rough. Once you've got that all bumped out, move on over to this other and just bring it all down. Make sure you sand that all out good. Now remember when you hit these caulking bits. Don't sand a lot on these caulking bit, it's going to roll up on you and make a mess and sand with the grain of the wood. And you want to bump it all the way down and get every square inch of it. Now, this is very important. Whenever you're painting latex, like an acrylic latex, over an oil that was there before, you've got to sand that good and rough so it'll take the primer. Be sure you sand that really well so that it has a rough surface on it so that when the primer goes on it's going to stick. If it stays glossy and smooth then it's going to peel right off there. Be sure you sand that down real good. Bump it on down. Then once you've got that interior done, you want to go ahead and sand your fascia, so just kind of bump it alone. That will knock a lot of that old dirt off that didn't come off with the pressure washing. Then sand that on out. Don't forget this bottom part. Once you've got that all sanded you want to bring that on down. You can see here that we have a lot places that we didn't spackle. Go ahead and sand those out perfectly smooth. Now that you've got that done, you can go ahead and bring it on down. Well I'm ready to finish these eave out, but these are the tips you need to remember whenever you're sanding the exterior eaves of your house.
