Layout & Cutting the Finished Top For Chest of Drawers

Hi this is Jon on behalf of Expert Village in this video clip we will laying out and cutting our finished top. If I take a look at the top of my chest of drawers it doesn't look as good as it could. If you take a closer look you'll see that we have our plywood showing all of our trim showing, we have all those joints and if we're to finish it it just wouldn't look very good. We're going to create a finish top for the top of chest of drawers this is going to be composed of a piece of plywood with oak trim and then we're going to glue that on top of chest of drawers. If you recall the depth of our dresser is 20" and the width is 32", now I want to have a 1" over hang of both sides and in the front. Now again the depth is 20" plus I want a over hang of 1" in the front but that's also going to have trim on it so I'm going to subtract 3/4" for that trim piece and my total depth is 20 1/4" inches. The width of my dresser is 32" I want a 1" over hang on each side so that's 2" total so that gives me 34" however, on those sides I have to put trim on it so I have to subtract 3/4" on each side which equals 1 1/2". When I calculate that out my total width is 32 1/2, my finished top is coming out of my 3/4 plywood sheets, now these are only 3 pieces that will be on that sheet.
