How to Detect Hearing Loss in a Dog

Another thing you want to watch for as your dog ages is their hearing. You might find that at some point your dog is not focusing, not paying attention to you as much they had been before. Hey Banana, hello. Hey sweetie, good girl. If you notice that you're calling your dog and they continue to walk away from you, they're ignoring you, it's not necessarily that they're in fact ignoring you. Sometimes it's that they in fact can't hear you. Your dog might lose parts of it's hearing, different ranges, in the ability to hear different ranges. One thing that you can try to test to see if making a clapping sound. He's obsessing a little bit. Good girl. And see what level that you need to talk to your dog. So maybe a quiet Hannah is not going to work, but if I called Hannah. Good girl. So you might need to speak to your dog in a slightly higher voice. Again, clapping sometimes works to get their attention. Once you get their attention on you and they're looking at you then you can encourage them to come to your or you can stop them from going where they're going. She's just be a little bit obsessive about something here on her back leg. Hannah, good girl. This girl here, she's lost some of her hearing, but as you can see if I raise my voice she hasn't lost all of it. Things can be a little bit tricky for dogs as they get older and they lose their hearing. If they are lying down, they're sleeping and they don't hear you coming or if they don't hear a child walk by, they can often become startled. If they become startled, they can react quickly. They'll be a little bit disoriented because all of a sudden things are right on them before they realize they're there. So you might see some behavioral changes. Maybe sometimes the dog will become a little bit more edgy, a little bit more aggressive in a situation when they didn't realize that somebody was on top of them or right next to them and all of a sudden the person is there. So watch for the dog's hearing and then for any behavioral changes that might go along with loss of hearing and try to figure out ways of letting the dog know that you're approaching so that they don't get startled that you're there all of a sudden.
