Why You Should Not Punish your Dog

So we have just been talking about setting your dog up for success and using lots of praise and positive reinforcement with your dog when you are teaching them the appropriate way to greet people. So is important to also bring up what you should not do when your dog makes a mistake. You should not use punishment and you should not get excited and work up yourself. If a dog jumps up on you they are doing cause they are trying to interact with you and they are trying to get your attention. If you watch dogs play with each other they are constant slanting there shoulder slanting and whacking each other with there feet, they jump on each others back, and they pull each other around by the ears. That is how dogs interact, they are playing with each other when they do that. When dogs come up to us they jump up to say hi they are being enthusiastic they are trying to say hi to us, they are happy to see us. Until we teach them that, that is not appropriate they don't know that we don't like that we don't like that. So if respond by yelling at them and pushing them away or bopping them with our knee the dog is going to think of a couple of things one thing is that he may say hey we are playing a game this is really fun this is how I play with my pals. Another thing a dog can think is hey all of sudden my human has gotten really scary and kind of flipped out and they are not a 100% reliable. Neither of those are things that we want our dogs to think about cause they are both sending the wrong message. If we start yelling and pushing again that is going to be interrupted by the dog that we are interacting with him. Often times like bored dogs negative attention, any kind of attention is attention they are trying to get it so we don't want them to thing well we come and jump on you and we get yelled at. So it is really important that working with your dog that you don't use punishment on your dog or anything and that you don't get excited and start yelling at the dog it is not going to help. It would actually inspire the situation and it is not going to take you in the direction of training direction that you want to go with your dog.
