How to Use Toys to Distract your Dog

So one thing that you can do is the way of distracting, redirecting your dog especially works well with young puppies but any dog that has a tendency to jump especially if that jumping occurs right when you are walking into a room is that you can actually teach them to go find a toy when they are coming to the door to great you. One of the ways you teach them that is that you start off by coming into the room whether if it is from outside or into the room that the dog is hanging out in without you and you give them a toy. Overtime the dog learns that it is pleasurable, it is fun, it is rewarding to interact with you when they have a toy in there mouth. So 2 example of toys depending on your dog, some dogs like that soft ones, the squeakers has been killed in this mousse, there is also balls. If you are going to be working with this method it is important that the dog actually have access to there toy so if you want them to eventually learn that as you come in and they hear you approaching the door they should go and find a toy and bring it and meet you at the door with the toy in there mouth, they have to have access to toys that means you have to have toys out and available for the dog. If you don't have toys lying around the house and this is not going to be a valuable option. But is a very good option it tends to be true that dogs with something in there mouth don't jump. It is not a 100% guarantee but it tends to be what happens when the dog runs around and engages with the toy. So we are going to do a demonstration with Raven and show how you can redirect the dog from jumping on you while presenting them with a toy in there mouth. Hey baby how are doing Raven hi, how are you? Oh good girl and once they get the toy in there mouth you can engage them a little bit and you can say good puppy. Reward them for playing with the toy you can see that all the attention has been redirected away from me and is not direct to the toy. So using things and it doesn't have to be a toy it could be bottles, it could be plastic bottles, using anything right when you are approaching the dog is approaching you to give them that object let them play with it if there are bored doing it on there own engage with them but you can see she is perfectly happy playing with this toy and it doesn't have anything to do with me at all. Great way to redirect the attention away from the person and give the dog a alternative way of behavior.
