Tonguing Technique for Trumpet Playing
All brass and woodwind players must learn how to tongue their instrument correctly. There are a number of theories on how to tongue correctly including the inker tongue and also using the tip of your tongue, I will talk about using the tip of your tongue. You can use a number of syllables in order to get the right sounds, so placing the tip of your tongue behind your upper teeth and we’ll say ‘ta’ or ‘tee’ or ‘too’ or ‘toe’, ‘toe-toe-tee-tee-tee’ and that would translate into this type of sound. You don’t want to tongue between the teeth that will give you a real tubby sound. Very unfocused. So right behind your teeth. That’s what we use for single tonguing.
