How to Produce a Sound Playing the Trumpet
Basic parts of how to make a sound. Now that we’re going to take our mouthpiece, we need to have the corners nice and tight; you want to have an M sound. We’re going to be buzzing; we buzz with the upper lip not the bottom lip. You’re going to be resting the bottom of the mouthpiece on your bottom lip and the buzzing happens on the top, so you have a buzzing sound like this. Beginners often make what I call the siren; it works really well for those 9 and 10 year olds. Get that going on in your trumpet and then we’re going to take the mouthpiece, you’re going to insert it into the lead pipe. You’re going to do a slight turn to the right and while you’re pushing in you don’t ever want to pop the instrument in or the mouthpiece into the instrument. And then to remove it, you’re going to have a slight twist to the left and pull out. So insert the mouthpiece, slight twist to the right, same buzzing sound and we’re going to start off with just an open tone.
