How to Breathe While Playing the Trumpet
As a brass player it’s important that you breathe properly and there are a lot of theories on how to breathe properly, but the one that I try to make sure that I do is making sure that I keep my upper chest down and I breathe down at the bottom of my lungs and fill up through the top. If you take your hands, one on the upper part of your chest and one on your stomach, take a nice deep relaxed breath, your left hand – your bottom hand should come up first. So your hand should be going in as you’re pushing up from the bottom and the nice warm air is coming out. It’s also a number of theories between hot air and cold air. Hot air is coming from the lungs, cold air will often come from just the mouth and that doesn’t allow you to have any support. I’m not supporting here, the air is coming out cold, but if I’m supporting from my stomach down here, nice warm hot air will keep your tone nice and full.
