How to Record MIDI: Cubase Tutorial

Hey everybody! My name is Matt and I am speaking to you on behalf of Expert Village. Right now we are going to take about midi recording and it works pretty much the same way as audio recording did but there are a couple of extra steps you need to take. If you want to right click and add a midi track, that is going to add your midi track and you are going to want to go up to devices and click VST instruments and this is going to bring up this dialog. In the black box where it says no instrument beside the one, you want to click there and I am going to go ahead and click drums and then click LN7 and that is going to bring up this dialog. You can sample what the drum sounds like by clicking each of these. I am going to go ahead and close those out though and you can also close out the VST instrument dialog. Now what you are going to want to do is go over here to out in the inspector beside your midi track and change the out to the LN7 which we just selected in the VST instruments and next what you are going to what to do is click on the box beside N and this is going to be dependent on your system. You are going to want to click your midi input. Next we can go ahead and make sure that your track is on if it's not already just like with the audio. You are going to want to go down here to the transport in the bottom left and make sure that auto cue is turned on and what that is going to do is snap your notes that you played to the beat so that your notes are a bit more accurate. Then you are going to want to go up to transport and click on. You are probably going to want to turn on the metronome so you can click that and you can go to transport and metronome setup and setup the metronome in a lot of different ways. I'll let you figure that out. You can also set the pre-count so that you know when to come in and whenever you are ready, just go ahead and click the monitor so you can hear your incoming midi and click record and just like when you are recording with audio, go ahead and click stop and you can listen to your midi.
