Preparing To Record A Singer At Home

Hi! This is Shana Bethune on behalf of Expert Village and I am going to talk to you about preparing for a session with a singer. Preparing before recording a singer can help a lot. There are some basic things we can do to make sure the session goes smoothly. First try to get lyric sheets for you and your singer. This will help the singer from forgetting lines and giving you a reference point when you discuss the song. For the singer, it is helpful to have a music stand. This is because the microphone can pick up the sound of paper rustling. Headphones for both you and the singer are a must. You don't want your monitors on feeding back into the microphone. The only sound that should be heard by the microphone is the singer's voice . Use the headphone splitters so that both of you can plug your headphones into the computer. Keep plenty of water around so that the singer can keep his or her voice going as long as possible. If the singer wants some alcohol, a little is okay but make sure they don't overuse it. The last thing you want is someone that has had too much to drink and it will wreck their voice. Be prepared to record every tape, even the practice ones. You never know when you will get a good tape. Most importantly, be prepared to be patient.
