Nail Care Tips for Show Dogs
Hi this is Elise with Expert Village.com and in this short video clip we are going to talking about how to properly maintain your dog’s toenails and ears. You want to get nail clippers that you are comfortable using. You want to remember that with a black nail, let me move this out of the way, it is a little bit harder to see with the quick is coming from underneath. People with dogs with white nails can often see the red area here that comes up along and over that red pink part stops is where you can cut. With the black nail it is much more difficult to determine. So you need to be careful when you are clipping your dog’s nails. If you cut the quick, one it will bleed quite a lot, it will probably hurt the dog and to get the blood to stop you are going to need a little white powder called quick stop. So I want to make sure you have that on hand. If you are not used to cutting your dog’s nails you want to make sure you take off just the smallest little bit. So here we got one of the dog’s nails and I am just going to take off a little bit. Once I have done one nail, I am going to give the dog a cookie. Good boy. Down. Good puppy and wait. Tai says you just clipped my nails the other day. You are not doing them again. If your dog is resistant like Tai is being right now, you want to just work on getting one or two nails (wait, wait,) one or two nails done, but don’t give into your dog. Don’t have a big fight about it but you also don’t want to give into if they decide they do not want their nails cut. Again, notice what I am doing here I can take this as a slow process. If he does not want to get his nails clipped, I can clip one or two and insists that you get that done and treat or reward after each nail. If you feel like you need to push it you can get another nail done. What I usually suggest to people is that you work on one or two nails a day until they get used to having their nails clipped. Now this guy typically used to having his nails clipped but I guess on any given day I can guess he can decide he does not want to have it happen
