How to Prepare a Show Dog for Bite Examination
Hi this is Elise from Expert Village.com and we are going to be talking in this short video on how to get your dog prepared for having their teeth examined by a judge. Tai here is gong to lend us his mouth. First we are always going to start with a dog in a stand stay position, stand, stay, wait, this way, good boy and wait. We always want to start in a position the dog is actually going to be examined in. If your dog is not familiar or used to having the mouth examined, you want to just come up to him and close the mouth and just pick up the lip. Wait. Once you have done that, give him a treat. We want to get him used to having somebody there familiar with mess with their teeth. Teeth, good boy. Wait. But the same time we want him to be holding his position. Wait. Teeth. Good boy. Some breeds need to have all of their teeth examined so you also want to go from the side. Teeth, good boy. Okay and now we can release the dog from the position. If your dog tends to shake his head back and forth, you want to remove the treat; you want to remove the opportunity to receive the reward. If they are standing still and they let you examine their teeth, you want to give them the reward making sure that they maintain their stand stay position. Once you are done, as always we are going to release the dog from the position and then you can repeat that exercise later on.
