Dennis Garrels for Expert Village. We always want to increase our range on the trombone. We seem to be always in a contest with the trumpet players in a band. Or, with altosax players of how to play as high and play as fast. The trombone is a more cumbersome instrument by nature. You have to move first to seventh position where a trumpeter just moves a valve, like on the valve trombone. Or, a saxophone moves one finger or a piano player. But we're always looking for more speed and more range. So, to get range you can use chords or scales and songs. Take a scale and the highest note that you're comfortable with and when you begin it's a lower range. If you're comfortable with an E or an F, start with the note that you can't get and go one pitch higher. I can't hit an F it's too high. Well, I'm going to try on an F now and see how I do. I am pretending to be struggling like I've done in the past to get in the past to get more range. And, pretty soon you'll get to the point of playing that higher F. Well, how about F sharp. Let's try for that. And your notes will get higher and higher and they'll be more easy. The range for professional trombonists to be able to hit comfortably is usually C sharp. That's about what's expected of you to play. It's pretty high. I'm not... That's the range that's expected. C sharp.
