Dennis Garrels for ExpertVillage talking about playing a tone. If you go to your school class or private lesson, or band class where you get something from me get your horn out now and try to play a tone with me. This can be frustrating and I want to make it very simple. You want to have a nice pleasant tone or a bold tone sharp tone. You don't want something that sounds like you got the flu or something or like you're tired or like a sad tone. You want a bright tone. So you got a instrument mouth piece here. Just to start out, just buzz through it. Sounds like a bee like that. Then, move the horn to the mouthpiece and you'll get your embouchure. We'll talk about that later. Just buzz for now. If you are getting a squeeky little sound you're buzzing too small. You're, Sit up straight or stand up straight. Get air. Breathe deep. Your lungs will last many many decades for a long time if you're a trombone player because you've got to breathe real deep. Play lots of air through the horn, almost as much as a tuba I think. Don't try for high notes. Don't try for those pedal tones I played. Try for a medium tone just with the slide closed in first position.
