Writing Your Own Modules for RPGs
Hi my name is Barry Osser from North Coast Role Playing in Eureka, California and I’m here today to talk to you about job of writing your own modules. When you start playing and you’ve gotten to the point where you’re comfortable, you now how your players are going to play or you know how players in general are going to play with you, you’ve got a pretty good feel for how to run the game, a good feel of the rules, every time you make them go left-they turn right, you can still tell them what’s there, it’s your time-it’s your turn-it’s your job, you need to start writing a module. So when building this component, when trying to write a module, which you have to think of, is the same thing as when selecting a module for buying. How many players? What levels they’re going to be? And what type of players they are? From that point on, you kind of have to get a feel for, are you going to have a module that’s going to be a one shot? Or are you going to have a module that’s going to tie into everything else that you’re doing so the players have a continuous world? It’s the difference between reading a pulp comic book; a one shot deal and reading a long run of books say a Robert Jordan’s series for example. When you’re writing that module, you have to decide do I want to put a piece for the next thing in there? Do I want to have stuff that’s continuous? They killed this character in this part, so this character’s father now is after them in this part and in the next part the character’s father is going to create such a problem for them that they’re going to have to kill him and now the kingdom is after them, this kind of play, you’ve got to make that decision. So when writing your own module, consider these options, consider them carefully because the players are counting on you.
