This is Richard on behalf of expertvillage.com. I'm going to try and explain several ways that you can possibly loose a game of 8 ball other than the conventional way of having your opponent run out on you. One way to loose a game is to pocket the 8 ball when it is not the legal ball to be shot at the time. Meaning that you still have your group of balls are still on the table. Another way that you can possibly loose the game is if you're shooting at the 8 ball and scratch regardless if you pocket the 8 ball or you don't pocket the 8 ball. If you do scratch the cue ball or the cue ball flies off the table, that is going to be considered a loss of game. If you pocket the 8 ball in the same stroke that you're pocketing your last object ball that's on the table, that would be considered a loss of game. Meaning that you've got one ball left on the table, you're shooting that ball, you make that ball, you make the 8 ball in the same shot in the same stroke, that's not going to get you anywhere but racking the balls again.
