The choice of stripes or solids in the game of 8 ball is not determined on the break even if one or both groups are pocketed on the break. Approaching the table after the break, the table is always open. Meaning that a player may use a strike to make a solid to determine their balls or a solid to make a strike to determine their balls. They may also use the 8 ball when the table is open to pocket either a solid or a strike ball. Once their choice of balls is pocketed on a legal shot, then the game continues and they have that stripes or solid for the duration of the game.

Richard, everything you said is correct except I don't understand the part where you say it is ok for you to use the 8 ball to make a shot immediately after the opening break. According to the rules, it is an illegal shot and you lose your turn, so basically it says that shot doesn't count. Thanks.
