How to Record Vocals on a Demo Tape

Hey! My name is Jerimae Yoder and I am with Expert Village. Let's talk about recording vocals now and in recording vocals it requires a couple of different things. Obviously you have to be ready and prepared as a vocalist to project the sound that you want to project into your mic. This is like your song, your song has to be ready too. Your instrument, your voice has got to be ready. A couple of ways to do that is to rehearse. If you need some work on your voice, go to a professional to help train your voice and go to the place where you want it to be if you need some help in there. A couple of things that you will really want to have is a good vocal mic; kind of like my Rode NT-2 that I have. A good mic stand and a pop filter to go in front of the mic so that you don't get the pa, ta sounds coming tghrough too predominantly in recordings. You may want to make your own vocal booth and by that basically a closet. Taking a closet and turning it into something where you have deadened all the sound around by using acoustic foam or you can get really ingenious and pick up this foam mat that I purchased for couple of bucks per sheet and form fit this into your closet using hot glue. In placing the mic in the pop filter, you probably want to have your mic just a little bit above where you are singing vocally. Therefore you won't be singing directly into the mic and making wishing sounds of air. You want to get as close to the mic you can again without making those brushing or wishing sounds. In setting your levels, you want to make sure that you are not, especially for vocals, that you are not tapping out your levels. Because if your level goes over, you are going to get some distortion and by using pre-amp you can really set those levels and use a little bit of compression on your pre-amp such as this, a nice little tube pre-amp or something like that or if you want to go high amp. There are some Avalon amps that cost a couple hundred to a thousand bucks that are probably the best ones out there because you are going to get a very clean and warm tone from vocals.
