Why You Need a Demo Tape

Hey! My name is Jerimae Yoder and I am with Expert Village. Today I am going to be talking about demo tape making and making your best demo possible with the means that you have. I was a musician and I am a musician. I have been making demo tapes for about 10 years which then got me signed to a national distribution deal with an Indian label. So making a demo tape is really important to take you to the next label in your musicality and reaching the audience that you believe you need to reach. One of the things that I learned early on in making a demo tape is that nobody wants to listen to junk. So don't spend your time making something that you don't want anybody else to hear. Make it the best that you possibly can. With the instrumentation you have, the friends that you have and even after that possibly take it to the next level in hiring people to help you get better at what you do and make it sound even better. Your demo is who you are so you've got to make it rock. They will know you by your demo. You go to MySpace, you go to these other websites. There are so many people out there doing music and you can hear about anything under the sun now with th4e click of a button. So you have to be better than anybody else. Your demo has to rock. Narrow down with what you want to do with your demo. In other words do you just want to get a demo out for your friends and family to listen to. Do you want to make a 4 or 5 song EP that you can sell at your shows? Do you want to necessarily get this to an A&R rep at a record label, an artist and repata rep at a record label because all three of those things you are going to accomplish different things with the first family and friends probably doesn't have to be the best. It is going to be pretty good and you want to make it as good as you possibly can but it doesn't have to be national quality. If you are going to get to an AR rep, man it's got to rock. But man I am telling you music is about emotions, music is about us inside getting out and if it is not sonically there, it's got going to hit them the way that the song really needs to hit them for them to go wow, I love these guys and I want to sign them to a national deal. So you got to make it the best you possibly can and we are going talk about this in a just a second here. We are going to go through a couple of different things, home recordings, going to studio and recording, different methods of recording and different instruments and things like that.
