How to Teach your Preschooler Numbers

Hi I’m Ann and I’m here to talk about numbers. Again an important subject that you need to do in an informal and relaxed manner at home, again it gives you a heads up for the beginning of the school year. An example of using numbers, here’s a rose, if you want to teach counting which is an important skill in math, you can take your child…something so simple is flowers around the house and say okay let’s look and see how many flowers are in the vase. And it's very important to emphasize with numbers one to one correspondence, meaning that you count one object with one number. So here we go for example we have one – two – three. We don’t want to go too much past these numbers. So you can count one at a time, one – two – three and you can have your child count with you and then count alone if he’s able to. One – two – three, again you’re getting the concept of one to one correspondence where you’re matching up number with object. This is an important skill that is emphasized throughout the school year and if you try these things at home, counting and looking around your house, this will help you to progress and to have success at school.
