How to Use a Belt Sander

Hi, this is Jon on behalf of ExpertVillage. In this video clip, I'm going to show you the correct method of sanding with a belt sander. First off, you want to make sure that your work piece is secured in either a vise or with clamps. Next, you want to make sure to get a secure grip on the belt sander before you start going. Now, I'm starting with my belt sander sitting on my work piece. When I squeeze the trigger, I'm going to move the sander back and forth in a steady motion. I'm not going to tip it side to side or front and back. To demonstrate how aggressive the sander can be if you're not careful, I'm going to sand this piece incorrectly. You'll notice that this edge is no longer square. I've kind of rounded that over because I wasn't being very careful. In addition, you'll notice that I took a big divot out of the side of my piece. All this because I wasn't sanding correctly.
