Grips Used in SAMBO Martial Arts

On behalf of Expert Village, I'm Stephen Koepfer at New York Combat SAMBO in New York city, and today I'm going to be demonstrating beginning SAMBO. In this clip, we're going to discuss basic grips. There's many, many kinds of grips. In SAMBO essentially, you can do any grip for any throw, but I'll show you a few of the basic ones. One basic one is double lapel grip. This one provides limited control of the shoulders. When you're throwing people, you want to be able to move their shoulders. This is for me one of the least favorite grips. Although, some people do like this grip very much. The second grip is behind the collar under the sleeve. This gives you much more body control and control on one of his arms. In SAMBO, the jacket is unique because we have epaulets. This is a very good grip because we get shoulder control very well from here. Another very popular SAMBO grip is over the back to the belt and controlling the arm. This is great for body control.
