How to Use the Layback Technique for Rock Climbing
Hi I'm Bill with Zoar Outdoor on behalf of expertvillage.com we are here today at a Chapel Ledges at Ashfield, Massachusetts and in this series I'm going to be talking about the basics of moving on rock. A lay back is a technique that you are going to use typically with a crack often in a corner, sometimes just in overlapping the crack. A fairly strenuous technique that you want to use sparely but can get you to some tuff spots. It works by opposing hand holds with foot holds so that you don't really need much in order to lever yourself up. Like I said strenuous I pulling hard on my arm in order to oppose my legs which are stronger. One thing you want to watch out for is rushing and trying to stand up to far because then your feet are going to slip cause you lost your opposition. You need to stick with that technique of a opposing your hands and feet, keeping your feet high right out in front of you until you can find the next set of good holes that are going to work for standing up on and the switch techniques. So the lay back works in a lot of situations and you don't want to over use it.
