Freezes In Breakdancing

Hey! How you doing? This is Jonathan Escotto, also known as B-boy Xcel, on behalf of Expert Village, and today we're showing breaking tips. Alright, now we're going to talk a little bit about freezes, or stalls as some of you know it. Now basically a freeze is when your body's moving and you basically bring your body to a complete stop or a freeze. One of the most basic freezes in B-boying break dancing is what we call a baby freeze. There are thousands of different freezes out there. There are thousands of variations, but this is one of the more basic ones. I'm going to demonstrate the freeze first. It looks something like this. Starting from low here. Basically, I'm right handed so I'm going to go off my right hand. It looks something like this. Now, that looks pretty easy but for someone just beginning, it can be kind of difficult. I'm going to give you a couple of tips to make it a little easier for you guys to do it. We're going to start off actually on our knees. Now, before you actually even begin to try this freeze, it's always good for you to kind of work out a little bit. Do some push ups, some hand stands, wall hand stands. Well hand stand push ups I should say on the wall are very good. Even head stands. Build up the muscles in your arms and in your shoulders to be able to do this. Now, when you feel that you're ready or prepared to be able to do a baby freeze, these are some tips to help you out. Now, we're going to start off on our knees. We want to have our knees so that we're not together like this. We want to kind of have them open. Now, I'm right handed, so I'm going to start off on my right hand. One of the most important things when doing a baby freeze or a chair freeze that later on you'll do, is your positioning of your arm. You want to take your elbow and bring it right where your hip bone meets. It's going to take a while for you to get to this point, but there's going to be a point where it's very comfortable for you to put it there. We call this a stab. It's kind of like you're stabbing your elbow into your hip bone. There's a nice little pocket there that keeps your elbow secure so it doesn't slip out or slip in. What we're going to do here is we're going to make sure we got our right hand here, we're going to bring it right in for the stab. We're underneath. Now, you're going to take your left hand. Your left hand is going to come here high to the ground. You want to have it higher almost above your head. Now, if you use your right hand, you want to take your head and look to your left. So you can rest your head down and look to your left. So stab, left hand high, then look to your left once you put your hand down. From here, when you put your hand down, you're going to bring your elbow into your body. Not your body into your elbow, but bring your elbow into your body so you can sit on it. If you notice, I'm here, my legs kind of go up. They already start to go up. I'm going to give you a demonstration of what I mean. From here, watch how my upper body, my back, automatically starts to arch up. When I'm here to stab, it already goes up. Now, when I'm feeling comfortable here, I can rest my head on the ground, bring my legs up. This could be a basic baby freeze. Now, to add a little bit more style, you want to try to cross the legs. So what I'm going to do is I'm going to cross my right leg on top of my left leg. So it's going to look a little something like this. Stab, here, bring it in, head here, here, cross the legs. Now, as you get a little stronger, you can get a little fancier. You can do a bunch of different switches, other movements. That's the most basic freeze. That's what we call a baby freeze.
