Footwork For The 6 Step

Hey! How you doing? This is Jonathan Escotto, also known as B-boy Xcel, on behalf of Expert Village, and today we're showing breaking tips. Now we're going to do what we call a 6 step. We're going to take it right to the floor. Now, the first thing's first. We want to start off with what we call a 6 step position. 6 step position would be almost like a football stance. Again, I prefer to go counterclockwise first, so what I would do is take my left hand and put it down here. In a 3 point football stance such as this. You don't want to be too far out in split and you don't want to have your butt too in the air. You want to be kind of like this. Now what you're going to do is you're going to put all your body weight on your left hand. You're going to take your left foot and step right 90 degrees like you did the Indian step. Now, if you're having a hard time balancing on one hand, which some of you will, it's okay to use both hands to balance you up. That was step one. Now you want to also step on your toes. We don't want to step like this flat-footed. It throws your whole 6 step off. You want to be light on your feet. You want to stay light on your toes such as this so you can move freely. Take it again from a 6 step position here, that's step 1 here. Keep you hand down. Step 2; you're going to take your right foot and you're going to place it right behind where your knee cap bends, right where it bends here. Okay, that's step 2. Step 3; you're going to take your left and you're going to bring it right forward, so you're almost in a comfortable squating position. You shouldn't be too far away like this. You should be pretty comfortable. You should be on your toes and be able to move freely, okay. We're on step 3, you're here. Now, on step 4 you're doing 2 things at once. The first thing's first; you're going to take your right hand, you're going to switch your body motion. You're going to take your right hand, switch completely so all your weight is now on your right hand. At the same time you're switching your right hand over, you want to take your right leg and you want to hook in front of your left leg so it looks something like this. Hook, so it's bent over like that. Now I'm going to demonstrate that how you do it at the same time. We're on our left hand, we're on step 3. This is step 3 now I should say. We're going to hook our leg and switch our body weight at the same time. Here we go. For step number 5, we're going to have both of our hands down. Make sure your butt is not on the ground like this. You want to have your butt off the ground, but also not sticking out like this. Now, from here we're going to put most of our body weight our left hand. You're going to take your left foot and step backwards here, like so. Now, the last step will be taking your right foot and bringing it right back to the beginning, and your back at the 6 step starting position. Now, the object of the 6 step is you continue facing the first direction you were in. So if I start facing this way, I want to end up this way. If I start facing this way, I want to end up here. When you practice it...Practice in a mirror. It's really good you practice in a mirror so you continue to get your body motion in the direction you want. Keep in mind stay light on your toes, stay on your fingertips. Another tip that'll help you a lot; when you're doing footwork, you don't want to be flat handed like this. You don't want to be too high on your fingers because that can lead to damaging your fingers if you slip. You want to be somewhere in between. So you want to have basically the top of your hand down. It's going to look something like this. Now, here is what a 6 step looks like starting from a 6 step position. I'm going to switch directions.
