How to Prepare Soap Molds
Now we are going to prepare our molds. I have decided to use this PVC pipe. It’s 3 inches in diameter and it is 8 inches long. I had it cut at the hardware store. They were very nice about it. I am using Vaseline on the inside of it. You can use shortening; however that will actually turn to soap. The Vaseline will not react with the lye so it is a sure bet for keeping it flexible and easy to get the soap out. I put on a pretty heavy coat. You are not going to goop it on but a pretty generous coat and I put it on through the whole thing. Then I take a piece of saran wrap or you can use the oven baking bags that are high temperature safe and I put over the top with a couple of rubber bands. That is what is going to stop the bottom. My soap when I pour it in here will be pretty thick so that is all it needs. Very slippery. Now you can use a lot of different things for molds. Any of these Rubbermaid Tupperware type containers work very well. You would Vaseline in them. Also since I am going to be hand milling this soap, I just put one of these oven bags in and the soap will slip right off the oven bag. You can use cardboard for molds; you can use wood for molds. One thing about the plastic molds is with a little flex it is easier to get your soap out. We are not using small individual molds in this basic process. Those I am going to be using in the hand mill. I am just looking for something here that will contain the soap so that it can cure.
