Basics of Chipping in Golf: Part 1

On behalf of expertvillage.com my name is Ray Boone and I run the Ray Boone Golf Academy at the beautiful Miami Beach Golf Club. Today I'd like to present to you the basics of short game. I'd like to introduce you to the basics of chipping. Chipping is a shot you're going to play once your ball is near the green, but it's not on the green yet. We're going to use basically whatever club that's going to land the ball on the front edge of the green and then allow the ball to roll to the hole from there. For the beginning player, I'm probably going to have them chip with something like a 7 iron, a 9 iron or a sand wedge. Most players don't have enough time to practice with a lot of different clubs. Truer players may use 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 pitching wedge, sand wedge, lob wedge and also a 3 wood, okay so most players don't have that much time in the day to really work on those. So what we're going to do is setup with the ball on the right toe, we're going to grip down on the handle, we're going to lean our weight on the left foot and we're going to try not to use much wrist action, so it's more of a almost a putting stroke back in through the golf ball, again without really cocking the wrist much.
