Be Aware of Toxic & Dangerous Plants When Hiking

Hi, I’m Kate I’m with Zoar Outdoor on behalf of expertvillage.com and we’re going to be talking about hiking today. When you’re hiking some of your concerns are going to be about toxic plants. You should look in your guidebook to see what they say about anything in the environment around you that is toxic, it could give you a rash, it could itch or it could poison you completely. Mushrooms, even if they’re good to eat when you’re at home, out in the back country is never a good idea to eat anything you don’t know. Those are pretty gross anyways. You also want to be aware of poison ivy, poison oak, poison sumac and know what each one of those looks like. Usually it’s in the leaves of three, but sometimes it’s hard to differentiate between them. These things can be a huge problem if you’re staying the in the back country for more than one day and it can be a problem in the front country, if you’re going to work with poison ivy, it’s never a fun thing to do. So be aware of what you’re walking through, what’s good and what’s bad and what the guidebook says to do about it. Most guidebooks have these things all planed out for you and says what to be aware of in that area. Don’t eat anything you don’t know and make sure you know the toxic plants in the area you’re going through.
