Hi, I’m Kate I’m with Zoar Outdoor on behalf of expertvillage.com and we’re going to be talking about hiking today. We’re going to be talking about evacuations. Depending on where you’re going for the day and how long you’re going to be out, if you’re out for a while you’re going to want to have evacuation plans and routes already planned out. When you’re evacuating a person, you also have to make sure that the emergency demands it. If it’s a high emergency, then you’re going to be evacuating someone up much faster than if someone has sprained their ankle and just needs to be done with the hiking and brought out for the rest of the trip. Evacuations aren’t just about the person that is hurt, it’s also about the rest of the group that’s involved. Most of the group or if not all the group will be evacuating the person out, who is hurt. So with keeping in mind the hazards for carrying someone out, the hazards of getting everyone out safely, these are all things that need to go into an evacuation plan. You also should know if it is an emergency, which would be a good idea to get some sort of medical training for the outdoors. There are very fast evacuations and then there are very casual evacuations and knowing which one has to happen is the most important. If you’re evacuating someone out that needs to get to the hospital immediately, you should also have started the forms of communication, so that when you do evacuate the person out to the safest spot, they will be someone there waiting to take them to the hospital. They’ll help you figure out where you should be evacuating from and the easiest point. But making sure you know your evacuation plans and you might even want to leave a vehicle at different spots on your hike would be a very good idea.
