Hi this is Ray and today I’m going to show you a great croquet shot called the takeoff. The takeoff is one of my favorite shots because it’s very interesting and very different from a lot of the other shots that we take. What we want to do in this particular case is we want to send our ball down the court, leaving this ball where it is. So what we’re going to do is have an intended target and let’s say we want to send it straight down this way, what we’re going to do is we’re going to place our ball, be sure it’s touching the other ball, and because we want to go straight down this way without moving the red ball what we’re going to do is we’re going to take our mallet and we’re going to place it against the two balls pointing in the direction that we want to go. What this does is this puts these two balls exactly in a position to send our balls in the direction that we intend. So once we’ve got those balls set up where we want them, we’re going to take our mallet and we’re going to grip it in a standard way and what we’re going to do is we’re going to send the yellow ball at an angle towards the red ball and what that’s going to do is that’s going to hit the red ball and go in that direction. Now in this particular shot you need to make sure that the red ball at least wiggles a little bit because if it doesn’t, it can be called a foul. So what we want to do is we want to get into our shot, we’re going to bring it back in a normal shot, you can see our ball went in that direction with the red ball basically staying in place. This is a great shot for setting up in front of wickets, or for sending a ball down to roquet another shot. So go out there and practice the takeoff, it’s a fun shot, it’ll give you a lot of great results.
