How to Make a Pass Roll: Croquet Rules & Etiquette
Hi this is Ray and today I’m going to show you how to do a croquet shot known as a pass roll. A croquet shot is where your ball is directly against another ball that you’ve previously struck in a roquet shot. Now for the pass roll, we’re going to want to have our ball further down the court than the ball in front of it. Of course that’s physically impossible if they’re both going in the same direction, however, if you’re going slightly different angles, it’s definitely possible. So what we want to do is we want to put our ball just slightly off so that we can send the red ball in that direction and yellow ball in that direction. Now for pass roll, we have to exaggerate things a little more than normal. We want to stand with our left foot even further forward than on a full roll or on a half roll, our other foot should be on the other side. We want to grip our top hand a lot lower than normal and our bottom hand right towards the bottom of the mallet, be sure when you do this that you don’t touch the bottom of the mallet as that is actually illegal and would be a foul. So we want to keep it pretty low, right to the head but without touching the head itself. For this shot we want to see a very steep angle and we don’t want to have a lot of back swing, but we do want to have a lot of follow through and what we’re going to do is because we’re sending the red ball in this direction and the yellow ball in this direction, we’re going to swing straight and send the two balls out to the sides. So again, we’ll grip the mallet, we’ll bring our back swing in a little bit and follow through and you can see our yellow ball went about twice the distance as our red ball. The pass roll is great if you need to get to the other side of a wicket or for setting up certain breaks and if you go out there and you practice this, you will be able to do it, it will be a great asset for you out on the court.
