Hoop Scoring in Croquet: Rules & Etiquette
Hi this is Ray and today I’m going to answer one of the more popular questions about the game of croquet. The question is, when is a ball considered to be run through a hoop? Now the reason this is popular is because in the game of croquet, if you have a ball in the hoops, it is possible for another person to knock the ball back out depending upon where it is. So it’s important to know when that hoop is considered to be scored or run. Here’s what we do. In order for a ball to be considered run through the hoop no portion of the ball can remain on the playing side of the hoop, the playing side is the side that you hit it through. Now, if a ball is part way through, if the ball is three-quarters of the way through, it is not considered to be run and can be knocked back out of the hoop by another player. In order for it to officially be considered run, no part of the ball can be sticking out of this side of the hoop. So even if the end of it is inside those hoops, if it’s not protruding in any way, it’s considered to be run and can’t be passed back through. So it’s important that you make sure on all your hoop shots that you clear the hoop as much as possible, especially if you want to continue your turn. Good luck.
